What rules should be followed? You’re trying to kill seeds, so don’t put lawn seed on; do that another time. Pre emergents work like a blanket so don’t put holes in it by aerating your lawn; save that for another time too. After watering it in, let the area dry out so you don’t wash it away, plus the new roots will wither faster and have less chance of recovering if it’s drier.
